Privacy Policy
Last Updated: March 24, 2026At SmartNotes, we believe your research and thoughts belong uniquely to you. That is why we built SmartNotes as a 100% local-first extension. This Privacy Policy outlines how we handle your data—which is to say, we don't.
1. Data Collection & Storage
SmartNotes does not collect, transmit, or store your personal data, browser history, or notes on any external servers. We do not have a database tracking your activity.
- Notes and Tags: All notes, tags, and context you add are stored strictly on your device using your browser's native
chrome.storage.localAPI. - Persistent Highlights: The extension requires host access to all URLs (
<all_urls>) to visually re-apply your saved highlights when you return to a webpage. This script operates entirely locally. It does not send your browsing activity to us or any third parties.
2. Data Usage
Because your data never leaves your device, we do not use your data for advertising, analytics, or any other purpose. Your data is used exclusively by the extension on your machine to provide its core features (saving notes, rendering highlights, and searching your saved items).
3. Third-Party Sharing
We do not share, sell, or trade your data with any third parties, simply because we do not have access to it. Your notes are yours.
4. Data Portability and Deletion
You have full control over your data:
- You can export a complete JSON backup of your notes at any time via the extension's side panel.
- You can manually delete individual notes at any time.
- If you uninstall the extension, all associated data stored in
chrome.storage.localwill be automatically and permanently deleted by your browser.
5. Analytics & Telemetry
SmartNotes includes exactly zero analytics, tracking scripts, or telemetry. We measure the success of our extension based on Chrome Web Store installation numbers, not by tracking our users.
